Pet health care costs can top human medical bills, new report on cat and dog insurance shows - CBS News

Pet owners may shell out as much — or more — money for their pets’ health care as they do for their own, a new report suggests. Pricey new technologies and more advanced treatment options drive up costs in many cases.
For a clearer picture of the types of animal illnesses, accidents, and resulting costs that pet owners face, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance, a company that sells medical coverage for dogs and cats, crunched data from 215,000 claims submitted by their customers during a one-year period.
The 7 foods most likely to make your pet sick According to their Cost of Pet Care 2016 report, the most common accidents and illnesses for dogs include stomach issues — often from ingesting dangerous human foods, such as chocolate and other sweets; skin conditions; ear and eye infections; growths; and chronic allergies and pain.
Stomach and skin issues plague cats, too, as well as urinary tract infections, cancer, kidney disease, eye and ear conditions, and heart and respiratory problems.

Keeping Your Pet Busy

Lucy Postins on Keeping Your Pet HealthyWhen I’m not feeling well it seems like my dog senses it – and for some reason that’s the time he pesters me the most to play. I feel guilty when I can’t take him out for a walk or play fetch because I’m in pain. I also feel badly when I can’t give my cats the attention they need.
For pet owners who can’t go for long dog walks, are there any games/fun training that will provide mental stimulation?
Sure! Something as simple hiding small treats around the house for your pet to find provides fun and mental stimulation to keep them busy. Interactive puzzles and toys will also give them something to focus on. KONG makes some of our favorite interactive toys. Fill them with treats or food and watch your dog or cat work to get the reward!

Fruits

As dog owners, it’s not uncommon to want to spoil your four-legged family members by sharing table scraps or your favorite snack with them. After all, if it is safe for you to eat, it must be OK for them as well, right? Not necessarily. While many human foods, especially fruits and vegetables, are perfectly safe, some are very unhealthy and downright dangerous to dogs. Dogs digest differently than humans, and eating the wrong foods can lead to long-term health problems and, in extreme cases, even death.  As carnivores, they have no need for fruits and vegetables as part of their diet, but an occasional fruit or veggie as a treat is OK.Image result for fruits and veggies
